China Holds Symposium on APEC Supporting the WTO Negotiations on Trade Related Aspects of E-CommerceAt the proposal of China to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Symposium on APEC Supporting the WTO Negotiations on Trade Related Aspects of E-Commerce was held via videoconferencing from March 24 to March 25. Attending the symposium were more than 300 delegates from 20 APEC economies including the United States, Japan and Australia, international organizations including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the APEC Secretariat, and prestigious Chinese and overseas think tanks, as well as the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Administration of Market Regulation, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce. WTO Deputy Director-General Yi Xiaozhun, APEC Secretariat Executive Director Dr. Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria, Ambassador Tan Hung Seng of Singapore to the WTO, and officials in charge from the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce also attended the symposium and delivered keynote speeches.Delegates discussed WTO e-commerce negotiations, with focus on such topics as definitions of key concepts, creation of an enabling rules environment, and cooperation on inclusive e-commerce development.The symposium was a significant proposal put forward by China to demonstrate its commitment to APEC trade and economic cooperation. Hosted by MOFCOM and sponsored by Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, the event aimed to carry on the APEC’s important tradition of supporting the multilateral trading system and the WTO, facilitate rules-making at the WTO through the regional multilateral platform, and deepen APEC cooperation in e-commerce and the digital economy.
