Wang Wentao: Implement Leaders' Consensus to Fuel China-France Cooperation

source: MOFCOM May 28, 2021

On the afternoon of May 25, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao held a video conference with French Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade Franck Riester. The two sides had in-depth exchanges about implementing the consensus of Chinese and French leaders, fostering new engines for China-France cooperation and jointly upholding the multilateral trading system.

Wang said that China-France and China-European Union (EU) trade and economic cooperation is on a course charted by the consensus reached between President Xi Jinping and President Emmanuel Macron during their six phone calls since 2020 and the video summit between China, France and Germany in April 2021. “China and France are both advocates of multilateralism and free trade. China is willing to further pool consensus with France and work together to contribute to reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The investment agreement between China and the EU is balanced, high-standard and mutually beneficial. We hope that France can play a positive role to enable the agreement’s early entry into force,” Wang noted.

“As China is building the new development paradigm, taking steps towards opening-up at a higher level and striving for peaking carbon emission by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, all countries, including France, will enjoy greater cooperation opportunities,” Wang pointed out. “Both China and France should implement our leaders’ consensus and foster new drivers for China-France cooperation, by giving better play to the China International Import Expo, Hainan Expo and other platforms, expanding agricultural trade, enforce the China-EU Agreement on the Cooperation on, and Protection of, Geographical Indications, and strengthening cooperation on climate change and third-party markets. We also hope that France can provide Chinese companies with a fair business environment in France.”

Riester expressed France’s commitment to extending its trade and economic relations with China, deepening EU-China cooperation, pushing forward WTO reform and addressing global issues on multilateral occasions. “France is ready to work with China to implement the leaders’ consensus and develop bilateral trade in a balanced manner. We welcome more Chinese investment in France, and are willing to provide a favorable business environment for Chinese investors.”
